They are deep ulcers containing granulation tissue and usually a black spot. Milk flow is impeded and the lesion is very painful. They are caused by excessive suction during milking although Staphylococcus aureus is usually recoverable from the lesions. Also called black pox. Blackspot grows up the teat canal causing the orifice to open and leak milk.
